No Holds Barred: A Splendid Day for Boxing

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses why the Amir Khan-Danny Garcia and David Haye-Dereck Chisora fights, held July 14, more than lived up to expectations and actually resulted in a splendid day for the beleaguered sport of boxing.

After a buildup marked by much trash talk and the opposition of the British Boxing Board of Control to this matchup, David Haye knocked out Dereck Chisora in the fifth round of their heavyweight fight, held at Upton Park, London. Both fighters congratulated each other after the fight.

In an upset, Danny "Swift" Garcia stopped Amir Khan in the fourth round of their fight in Las Vegas, Nevada, to unify two of the 140-pound titles. Khan had originally been scheduled for a rematch with Lamont Peterson in May, but Peterson had tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug in a prefight test conducted by VADA, the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association.

Despite all the controversy leading up to both of these fights, we explain why, when the battles actually began in the ring, the results were good for the sport of boxing and for the fans.

It's good for boxing to have the franchise fighter lose occasionally. Even the clearly rigged decision win by Timothy Bradley over Manny Pacquiao gives us something to talk about. But the recent wins by Joseito Lopez and Danny Garcia over heavily favored but certifiably flawed money fighters are more on point. They move the air around a little bit, and reestablish at least some sense of boxing as a sport where, on any given night, either fighter can win.
